2008 Town Hall: Translating Breast Cancer & Environmental Research into Action
The Community Outreach and Translation Core (COTC) of the Bay Area Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Center (BABCERC) gathered a diverse group of researchers, community members and policy makers, including California State Assemblywoman Fiona Ma and California State Senator Carole Migden, to discuss BABCERC research and the research process, environmental factors that may increase a person’s future risk of breast cancer, and community participation in the research process. Discussions focused on the challenges of transdisciplinary research, integrating community participation in research, and moving from research to public policy to reduce risks of breast cancer. The meeting format included open-microphone discussions. Participants were encouraged to submit questions to the speakers beforehand. Our guest speaker was Mark Schapiro, editorial director of the nonprofit Center for Investigative Reporting, and author of the new book, Exposed: The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products and What’s at Stake for American Power.
