These leading breast cancer investigators plan to coordinate a series of rodent models of mammary gland development with risk factors for breast cancer and variability in a cohort of young African American and Latina girls in East Harlam, New York . A sophisticated genomics and proteomics approach to explore the impact of estrogenically active chemicals, such a TCDD, bisphenol A, and phthalates, during early, critical periods of development will be facilitated by by advanced informatics at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. The proposal is highly focused on critical issues such as the timing and dosage of exposures, enviro mental agents with potential influence on breast cancer pathogenesis, exten t of physical activity, and family-environment stresses. The Community Outreach and Translation Core will organize educational workshops for study participants and publish a bi-lingual newsletter, “The East Harlem Girl Power News,” for the local community and concerned residents.
